Project Features/Highlights
  • Consists of 2700 square metres of precast concrete mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls totaling over 730 metres in length.

Current Progress

These walls consist of 2700m2 of pre-cast concrete mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls, totalling over 730m in length.  The project is a split between the north and south sides of Crowchild Trail, which will allow for the ultimate widening of Crowchild Trail.  The walls are cast with a raised stone finish and will be sprayed on site with the City of Calgary's standard Banff Beige pigmented sealer.

Project Description

A contract award arising from the Sarcee Trail Bridge project built in 2005, these walls, which bear on a cast-in-place footing, are split in area approximately two-thirds to the north (Dalhousie) of Crowchild with the remainder on the south (Varsity) side allowing for the widening of the freeway.  They are supplied precast panels with a raised stone finish and are sprayed on site with a clear silane sealer, capped with a cast-in-place coping and a metal guardrail.  Each earth panel is held in place using galvanized reinforced straps that are placed into the gravel backfill as the wall is installed.  The proximity to the roadway creates a very confined work area requiring lane closures for the duration of wall installation and constructing the cast-in-place coping.
