Project Features/Highlights
3 public and 3 private concourses Project Description
The STAPLES Center made sports history as the first facility in North America to house three professional teams under one roof. At just under one million square feet, it also made PCL history as the largest sports and entertainment facility we'd ever built in Southern California. In order to meet an aggressive 18-month schedule, we stepped out of the box of arena construction. Using a structural system of precast and cast-in-place construction, we were able to start all aspects of the building much earlier than a normal cast-in-place building. There was less scaffolding, so we could do the wall layouts earlier, and less reshoring so we could start rough-ins and decks earlier. Finally, because there was less formwork, it was a lot faster to strip. While we credit our innovative construction system for keeping us on target, we also attribute our success to our design-assist capabilities. Because of the project's speed, we completed structural designs for on-site, cast-in-place concrete using our own shop and lift drawings.
